How to Look After Your Wood Floor
Well maintained wooden floors are some of the most elegant floors that
you can have in your home. They are however sensitive to handle and you
need to be well aware of the do's and don'ts of wood floors. Unlike conventional tiled floors, a wood floor is vulnerable to damage even
from small dirt particles and gravel. When they are stepped on as people
walk around the house, they graze the wooden surface and within no time
the floor is dull and full of scratches. Here are some important
pointers to help you maintain a smooth and shiny floor:
1. Protect your
floor from direct sunlight which will cause fading. You can do so by
using curtains, sheers and blinds to block the light especially during
the hotter hours of the day. For permanent protection, you can use
tinted windows which will always filter the amount of light hitting the
floor. Unregulated sunlight leaves uneven patches on the floor.
2. Instead
of sweeping with a broom, use a vacuum cleaner as it sucks out the dirt
and particles which are hiding between the wooden floor boards. Use the vacuum
cleaner with a bare floor attachment instead of those with beater bars
as they can damage the wood floor. If sweeping is absolutely necessary,
pick a broom with soft bristles.
3. Wooden floors easily show signs of wear
in areas that are often stepped on. To prevent these uneven wear, use a
rug, mat or carpet in these high traffic areas. Be careful not to leave
it in one place for too long so that the floor can maintain a uniform
color.
4. Wood floors are easily damaged by sharp objects. Fit your
furniture with slip mats or simply use plastic container lids to
prevent contact. Move the furniture by lifting and not dragging on the
wood floor. High-heeled shoes should have a rubber or plastic cover to
avoid poking the floor. Alternatively they can be left at the door and
flat shoes used in the house. Remember to trim pets' nails too.
5. Liquid
spills should be dried immediately with a paper towel or cloth.
Otherwise they will be absorbed by the wood causing permanent damage,
after which the floor boards will have to be replaced.
6. Use cleaning
agents that are specifically formulated for wood floors, as they will
remove the dirt gently without causing damage. Normal detergents are
likely to leave scars on the floor. Avoid mopping with water at all
costs; only wipe with a damp duster when necessary.
Minor damages should be repaired at once to ensure that they don't accelerate to major problems which will require professional attention and a substantial financial liability. Most minor repairs involve stripping off the finish around the spot, filling in the damaged area before applying a fresh coat of finish. The finish/polish must be safeguarded at all times as it protects the wood floor below. With several types of wooden floors available, understanding the specific type that you are dealing with will enhance your chances of giving it quality care.
